Someone with better reading comprehension skills would note that my post DID NOT advocate paying teachers any less than they are now or changing the compensation in any way, shape or form, so your comment is quite unwarranted.

Well its 185 days contracted, but they also start with roughly 2 weeks vacation and I think end with 3.5 weeks (?). So its not even half the year.

Did you even read and understand what he stated? Your making yourself look foolish and making teachers side of a rather explosive arguement look downright aweful.

He said teachers are paid a yearly salary, thats means they are paid for the year even though they only work 9 months. Why are you argueing with him trying to make the same point in a different manner? Your continued assertion that they are out of work for 2 months a year is misleading and factually incorrect. The correct arguement here is that they are on break during this time, it is incorrect to say they are "not working" in this context.

How about this? They get paid a handsome 12-months salary for 9 months of work. Yes, they get paid for the 9 months they are working but at a rate equivalent to a very nice 12-months salary.

The way school works, yeah, it goes from the beginning of September until the end of June and July and August are downtime. You get paid assuming you will budget for the summer. If you want to make more money at school, you can teach summer school, which is not included in the regular school year in the contract so you get more for it (there really isn't that much money in teaching summer school and a lot of people just want the time off).

I left Long Island, mostly because my school taxes went up to 16k. The average school teacher on long island makes $85 k a year PLUS outrageous pension and health benefits...and all for a NINE months of work (less numerous holidays, a week off for xmas, february break and easter). They dont need to save a penny for retirement because their pensions are so generous (Private workers have to save for their own retirements PLUS pay for the teachers pensions). My neighbor is a teacher and she drives a mercedes, so no, not a 50k car; a $60 k car. I think the only people left on long island WILL be teachers. You get what you deserve. Long Island is turning into Greece. Good luck to you all.
