On Long Island that same experience and qualification gets you twice if not more.
Our cost of living, and quality of life is just as high, and our taxes are about half....
We have excellent schools where majority 82% go to college and graduate!

Or maybe he hasn't been the beneficiary of pay raises that averaged 7% for the last decade.

I think the median for LI is probably no less than about $83k-$85k and possibly about $5k+ higher for full-time teachers for the 2009-2010 school year. You could take the position that the burden of proof is on the shoulders of those that are finding fault with the current system, but I'd ask those that are defending the status quo what their honest opinion/estimate would be for the median salary of a full-time LI public school teacher. I just don't think there is anything that can support an argument below $80k, but I'd be happy to hear some reasonable discussion.

..........and don't forget that the typical teachers medical, dental, prescription, eyeglasses, life insurance etc etc and pension benefits costs the taxpayer approximately another 25K to 30K per year for less than 37 work weeks per year. Outrageous and unsustainable!

Not every district gives the teachers dental etc. Some local unions set up their own "trust fund" to cover dental, vision, life insurance etc, paid for by the teachers, not the taxpayers.

You're right they do get those benefits from their unions but guess what...the School Districts pay a lump sum of taxpayer dollars per teacher to fund those benefits. In East Williston taxpayers got gouged for $2,064.00 per teacher...and that was for 2002. I'm sure in 2010 its well over $3000.00!

I think the NHP Guy is being purposefully vague. I think the median is 45K, can anybody play this guessing game, NHP Guy?

That source is based on 10,000 people reporting, it appears to be individuals sending in their salaries. I would go by the Board of Education Site that indicates the averages in the 80K's.
The starting salary in most districts is around 40-50,000, how could the average be $60,000.
