Let me tell you that I think it would not be a big deal if one family or one couple lived in a house and rented the house "illegally". What bothers me about this whole situation is the people who rent one house to group of people who have a group of children who attend my school district and do not pay a dime to support the area. They recently cut a special education preschool program in hicksviile because of budget cuts. Lets be fair about what people are saying. If they someone wants to rent their house or apartment then keep the house nice and don't rent your home out as if it were a hotel.

I am so surprised at the slack that the OP is getting for reporting an illegal apartment. Illegal apartments devalue neighborhoods and properties. They are a huge drain on the tax payers. HE is doing a good service for his community.

If someone could not afford an overpriced home, without renting out a portion of it illegally, they should not have bought it! I really cannot sympathize with them as their willingness to buy with the thought "i will just cut a portion of it up and rent it out to some college kid" is part if the reason why home prices became so out of touch.

How about when a dirtbag boyfriend shows up at any given hour blasting rap music for the late night booty call? Oh, did I mention that the street is beginning to look like a parking lot? Last I checked, I didn't live n a commercial road. I'm not going to call this in to code enforcement, I'm just trying to make a point as to why someone might not like illegal apartments on their street.
If it was a little classic rock for a cookout would it be any better?
What would you do if it were your neighbors parking their cars on the road...not illegal tenants or visitors, but the people paying taxes like everyone else on the block?
Some people complaining on here need to get the sticks out of their asses, mind their business, and live their own damn lives. Seriously.
Let me ask a question: do people have the same indignation when there are 10 people living in a single family house? Maybe 3 generations all crammed in and pooling resources, are those of you up in arms about "bringing down the neighborhood" having coronaries that you can't report those people for living like sardines, or do they get passes?

QFT. It doesn't appear that people can see past the dollar signs they're temporarily getting from these apartments. I would report without a second thought. Do it legally.

Overcrowding a single-family home is a fire hazard and should be reported no matter how the inhabitants are related IMO.

Yeah but I bet you bottom dollar those looking for blood and quick to report a neighbor for an illegal rental probably have over-crowded homes on their block that they aren't as concerned about and wouldn't bother reporting. Let's be real.

You know what I think is the #1 impetus for reporting illegal rentals?

Parking!

I think that when people have tenants and the tenants park in front of other homes, etc., that is what makes many turn others in.

I had a friend in Queens who asked me what I thought before she moved into an illegal apartment (which had been turned in before). I asked her if the previous tenants had a car (they did). She does not drive at all and was not planning to learn how and get a car, plus it was only going to be her in the apartment (single, no kids, thus a very low profile in the neighborhood). I told her nobody is going to turn you in because nothing is going to be conflicting with their own self-interests. She's been there several years now with no problems whatsoever.

Oh go to the town of brookhaven and report a complaint. But make sure you know your facts first ; my wonderful neighbor reported us for having a tenant in our basement and there was NO way to was true!! He jumped to conclusions.

There is also a sanitation inspector dept that you can seemngly report a complaint to also ; this is for excessive garbage etc.

When the inspector comes, you dont have to let them in ; I dont know what happens then as when they came to me, I let them in ; I had nothing to hide at all.
