If there are illegal apartments in existance it is not because of some intentional crimminality going on...It is out of need..They would not exist if there was not a need for housing - so why don't you mind your own business and let those in need have a home...legal or not.

You also should really be careful too in some instances, often extended families live together (like how my mom & little sister live with us) and you may assume there's an apartment or something, when it's really not.

The economy has really hit people hard on the island. Many families are moving back in together. Not always the case, but you don't want to make enemies in your neighborhood either.

Illegal apartments are a major problem on LI.

You might be able to make a case for "the poor, hard-working person trying to keep their house by renting out their basement."

But for every owner occupied house with an illegal basement apartment there are absentee landlord houses divided up like egg cartons with a dozen people living in what amounts to a walk-in closet.

You can't have your cake and eat it to. Illegal apartments are just that, illegal.

If you choose to report one, then that's your prerogative and there's certainly nothing wrong with it.
