When I lived on Long Island it would be once every 3-4 months I'd come off the island usually to visit relatives in NJ and the 1-2 a year travel trip if that. I lived on the Nassau-Suffolk border at the time...about 45 min to the city no traffic
Very very rarely, the once or twice a year family ski trips are about the only time I have left Long Island. Other notable events are both of my cousin's college graduations (VA and MI), going to Pennsylvania, Washington DC, and Florida on vacation, and to Massachusetts for a family party. Maybe about 15 times total in my entire life so far.
I go into NYC very rarely as well. If I do it's usually to go to JFK or LaGuardia airport. I never go into Manhattan, I don't see what's so special about it. Everything I need I can get out here on Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk). In fact, if the entire island of Manhattan floated off into the Atlantic I would not be the least bit upset.
How many times a month do you travel to the Mainland? - meaning off Long Island thus excluding Staten & Manhattan.
Excluding Manhattan and Staten I voted for 2 to 3 times a month. Of course it varies, for instance if I am on vacation.
Its interesting, I have seen threads where Long Island has been called provincial because we are isolated from other parts of the Northeast. But on the other hand, we pretty much have everything we need here on LI, including good access to a major world city.
So there is really no need to go off island very often and if we want to, we have 3 major airports we can use.
excluding vacation, perhaps only like twice a year... trips to friends' close by like Westchester County... just other suburbia... not much to see anyway.
