I don't have an emotional attachment to it one way or another.

One more positive for the Hollywood sign is that it if it were to be attacked in a terrorist strike, there would be no loss of life and it could be easily replaced.

I suppose it's somewhat low-rent but since it's always been around, I find it really reassuring to see it looking over the metro region. It's a great a landmark for orientation purposes as well as an informal smog indicator. I guess it's the North Star of Los Angeles.

Since the sign is not visible from the Valley, do Valley residents have any attachment to the sign?

Regarding city landmarks, aesthetically, I prefer the Theme Building at LAX, Griffith Observatory, City Hall, the DWP (John Ferraro) building, and the Watts Towers.

The current establishing shot standard seems to be the US Bank (Library) Tower.

P.S. I saw some old B&W footage (50's?) of the Pasadena Freeway North and was pleasantly surprised to see a virtually unchanged city of South Pasadena sign (made from plants) on the embankment before the Orange Grove exit. Are there other interesting city signs in L.A.?
