Of course it depends on what you consider safe, but generally you are not going to get a truely safe location in the $800 and under price range. Where are you seeing these and are you familiar with the area or buildings? Classified do not always tell the true story..

Rent control in Santa Monica is only for people who've lived there since 1998 or earlier and wouldn't help someone just moving in.

BTW, rent control has totally failed at keeping housing prices down - it has just the opposite effect. That's why it's difficult to find an economist who thinks rent control is a good idea - even Paul Krugman's opposed to it.

i think what fails to keep housing prices down- especially single dwelling apartments, is the fact that the laws aren't really enforced concerning how many people can live in a one or two bedroom. In some neighborhoods (mostly immigrant neighborhoods) it's not out of the ordinary to have 5 people living in a one bedroom apartment.

This has probably already been brought up at some point on here but I couldn't find it so here we go:

I'm trying to stick to a budget of $800 a month or less for an apartment or guest house. I know it's tough but found a few decent looking ones however...

Where are the safest places to live for this price??? I am looking in the west side (brentwood, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, etc), los feliz, glendale, burbank, pasadena areas. Preferably some place with private or garage parking.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Your best bet is South Bay (Torrance, Hawthorne, Lawndale, Gardena) for $800 / mo rent.

Where you want: You're looking at $1200 - $2000 a month for a 1 bedroom apartment.

and the areas you specifiy are about a 40 mile radius. Narrow down: Where are you working? Because polaces like Burbank or Pasadena may not be places you want to trek from.

To say one can't find decent living quarters for $800.00 a month, and in a safe area is not necessarily the case.
My properties are all located is safe areas, and in particular the properties on the border with South Pasadena I am renting for $800.00 a month.
These are detached one bedroom houses with off street parking and washer hookup.
So to say nice rentals don't exist at a reasonable price in a safe area is bogus.
Bob.

Calguy, what's the catch? There has to be a downside at that price for detached housing. Color me skeptical.

and I have to wonder what adjacent to So Pasadena means? I am not saying these places do not exist, but I do know they are few and far between.

The only person who can say if a place is "safe" or not is YOU. My idea of safe may not be your idea of safe.
