I'm an early 30's single male who is considering relocation for a job promotion. The job will be in downtown LA - near 6th and Hope. Looking for suggestions on where to live - just naming some neighborhoods that might be a good fit would help. Things I'm looking for:

near bars, restaurants, etc
community with other single professionals
short commute to downtown
rent - less than $2k, preferably $1500 or less
crime rate- city average or better

Is living in downtown itself a viable option? The last thing I want is to run into homeless asking for money every time I leave my apartment- had enough of that in SF.

Downtown is a very viable option. If you want to AVOID homeless stick to South Park area of downtown.

Other potential areas:

Silverlake/Echo Park
Los Feliz
Miracle Mile
Pasadena
