My mother and I are planning on moving to either Los Angeles or San Diego next year from New York. I'm 17, she's in her fifties. I'll be away at college most of the time so it's more important that the house we find matches her needs rather than mine.

As far as the house itself, our price range is about 300,000-500,000 and we are looking for something with 2beds/2baths.

Our ideal neighborhood would have a good arts community and nice places to eat. Since we have a strict price limit, we are willing to settle on the ideals, but it must be low-crime.

Also, would you say that we should look more into San Diego than Los Angeles perhaps for what we are looking for?

Where are you planning to attend college?

Torrance and Gardena would be ideal South Bay areas. Not too expensive, but the area is mostly suburb, with commercial areas on the main thoroughfares. You'd be near 3 major freeways and quick access to the 5.
