I can't really answer about the black communities, although in LA, I lived in a very racially diverse area and it was not nearly as segregated as it is here in the South.
I find it interesting that you say LA has a bad/poor image. I find that is primarily true in the South. I have never met so many people who view LA so distantly (they many times say, "it is a whole different country over there.") and many times they say that when they have never even been there!
There are areas of LA that are predominately black that are lower income areas, but really, there aren't as many black only communities as there are here (I am in Charlotte, NC). I have found it very uncomfortable to be so segregated.

You'll be fine. I've been in LA 4 years - originally from a very small town in SC. I am black - and I haven't had any drama of any sort. We live in West LA - and you'll find in all parts of LA there is lots of diversity. If you want to visit Black neighborhoods - have your soon take you to Leimert Park (great Jamaican food there at Ackee Bamboo) The Inglewood - Ladera Heights area are also predominently Black. Fox Hills Mall in Culver City draws a lot of folks of color.
But I've been to your hometown - be prepared for intense culture shock just with the sheer number of people, the number of cars on the road and the lack of green space. LA is nothing like SC and GA - but I think visiting a new place and soaking in the experience will be a good thing. And it's just a visit - you'll be back in GA impressing your friends with your photos and vacation stories before you know it.

I agree that you should enjoy your stay and take lots of pictures. I'm sure your son will take you to some fun places. From the POV of it being a vacation, I seriously wouldn't worry.
Has your son told you any of the things he wants you to see/do while you're in the area?
