ACTUALLY, woodland hills is not far from the coast as the bird flies, certainly closer than downtown LA. the difference is that woodland hills has a mountain between itself and the ocean, thus no ocean breezes.

Woodland Hills is only 10 miles from the ocean but it is over fairly high mountains between the west San Fernando valley and Malibu. Woodland Hills has the coldest night temps of anywhere in metro LA during winter but day temps are warm [around 70F during winter].

Who wants the climate of Phoenix? It gets down to 27 degrees here and up to 116 degrees. Plants either freeze or burn up. I used to live in Arcadia, anything grows there.

Default Palmdale and or Lancaster is the closest in Los Angeles County!

Hi Alive and Well,

Palmdale and Lancaster are located in Northern Los Angeles County. It is the closest climate and area that you will see in comparison to Phoenix.

It doesn't get as hot as Phoenix does in summer, but it gets hot. It's dry and desert climate. In the summer, it doesn't cool down very much.

It gets cold in the winter and we get the occasional snow. People like to say we have all four seasons here, and well, I suppose they're right.

We don't have the sabarro cactus trees, but we have yuccas-as close as you'll get.

Check it out if you're looking to stay in Los Angeles and stay as close in climate to Phoenix.

Let me know what you think! I'm in Palmdale and my sister lives in Flagstaff. I've been to Phoenix only once, but she goes quite often. She also lived in Palmdale many years ago.

Using Sunset Western gardening book parlance, I believe most of Phoenix and burbs, other than some of the ones way to the north or east (e.g. higher up) are Zone 13. Whereas, the Mojave is Zones 11, maybe some 12 and a bit of 3. In other words, can get much colder in winter than Phoenix.

Aren't Palmdale and Lancaster actually located in Kern County? I'm pretty sure they are. Thanks to all those who replied with information. I actually started this thread out of curiosity. I'd be willing to consider living in another part of LA county or even Phoenix perhaps. Yes the weather in Phoenix gets very hot in summer but still many people live and survive there. Where there's a will there's a way.

Tons of people not only live and survive in Phoenix, they THRIVE in Phoenix. The hardest part is your first summer. Make it through that and you're a Zonie.

No, they are well within Los Angeles County. The Kern County line is a bit north of Lancaster at Rosamond.
