Default Is this zipcode 90036 a good area to live in?

I'm moving to Los Angeles in a few years. I found an apartment that I love, but I heard that the zipcode 90036 really isn't a good area to live in. Which kinda sucks cause the apartment that I love is in that zipcode. I wanted to know is this true. Is this not a good area to live in?

Is this apartment building made out of chocolate? What is so special about this apartment? And why concern yourself about this when you're not moving for a few years? And what are you going to do if this apartment complex doesn't have any vacancies?

If you are going to move to LA, then you need to stop thinking like a hick and get some street smarts. Asking about a zip code to live in because you love an apartment even though you're not moving for a few years isn't being street smart.

When you are ready to move, then ask this question again. A lot can happen in a few years. Hopefully, you maturing will be one of those things.

you are wondering about an apartment in an area where you might, by some chance, be moving to in a coouple of years. A lot can happen in 2 or so years.

Where did you get your information, both about the zip code being good or not so good and the discription of your perfect apartment?

It sounds more like you are jumping the gun a little.

I see you want to be a director, but you are a student and studying medical coding, is that right?

What you need to do and certainly not right now is, save some money, plan on how you intend on supporting yourself while still in school, and then come and visit So Ca for maybe a month or so. Talk to people, find out what things are really like, then come back and start asking about places to live, the cost for a decent rental, etc.

I have known two people that lived in Park LaBrea, one 35 years ago and one 2 years ago. They both loved it. What did you hear was wrong with the area?

In general, I agree with the preceding posters, see where you are in two years and then check things out.

It's a work name.

OP: 90036 has never been an area I consider bad.

I sublet an apartment at Park LaBrea for a couple of months. It was great! (although, I had my bike stolen off my front steps, where it was chained up, within a week of moving there. My own fault, though.)

We then decided to move there. We found an apartment for rent and filled out an application. They wanted the WORLD from us. Tax returns, pay stubs, references, everything. We gave them everything they wanted. They called my work (where, at the time, I was making a LOT of money. Over $100K about 10 years ago) and talked to my boss. THEN they wanted MORE tax returns. Like, two more year's worth. It got insulting and I said "screw it" and found somewhere else to live. It seemed kind of Stepford to me at that point.

In any case, it was a decent area. Right down the street from Molly Malone's & across the street from the tar pits & museum. I liked the area. This was 10 years ago, though.

Just look at this City Data page for information: http://www.city-data.com/zips/90036.html

The 90065 area code is heavily urban with 82% renters. About 70% Anglo & 10% Asian; it is heavily Jewish. It is fairly expensive w/ average income $71,000 w/ 35% families [so it is mostly single people]. A section of LA called Hancock Park is in 90065 zip code & is considered very expensive. But also Park La Brea\ Farmer's Market\ Fairfax\ mid-Wilshire districts are more middle-income. Some good art museums and the La Brea tar pit\ dinosaur museum. Crime stats are relatively low. It is near West Hollywood\ Beverly Hills.

90036 could be very different a few years from now. Pointless to ask now.

I'm actually planning a move to this area soon. It's overall a good area, but it's part of the city of Los Angeles, so just as in any major urban area, crime can happen. Just be on your guard and you'll be fine. You didn't mention what you love about the apartment you found, but keep in mind that you'll be safer if it's in a secure building. I prefer not to be on the ground/first floor, because it seems like everyone I know who does eventually get's broken into.
