i read that article last night, what a racket! no public official deserves that kind of salary, especially when they work for such a tiny municipality. think of the extra millions the city would annually if the administration took home normal salaries. the sad part is that because Bell is such a poor city, most of the voting constituants probably have no idea of how they can effect the political process and get these leaches out of office.

Did La Opinión, Univision or La Prensa pick up this story? It'd be nice to hear what Bell residents have to say about this.

I first saw this story in the print version this morning walking past a newstand. At first I THOUGHT I was looking at the NEW YORK TIMES and this was a story on the City Manager for New York City.

When I realized it was the LA Times I was like WTF is going on in Bell!! No frickn way is there any justification for those kinds of salaries. I mean $800,000 for the City Manager of a city with less than 40,000 residents. The President of the U.S. gets $400,000.

The wikipedia entry for Bell notes the city was incorporated in 1927 as a "General Law" city but in 2005 the city voters elected to become a Charter city. Have no idea what the issues were then but just noting it.

Bell, California - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Regardless, the residents of Bell are getting fleeced big time. I don't care how long the City Manager has worked there....

Did some reading and found the answer to my question. Their salaries are established by City Council. Not to mention the guy gets a 12% raise every year...

Yes, and the City Council members pay themselves $100,000 per year. As mentioned in the article, most "small" cities only pay around $400 per month for what is essentially a part-time job.

It is extravagant, but generally in business you have to pay more to get talent if you're an unattractive employer. That said, a 300% premium isn't what I'm talking about
