Hello,

I live with my wife and daughter in Montreal/Canada. I am considering to move to LA - my work will be in downtown. I would probably move to a somewhat nice and save area (assuming I can cover the cost). I hear that West Hollywood is nice and not to far from downtown. I would like to know what factors I need to consider before I move at all.

I am thinking about schooling for my daughter - do I need to get a private school or are public schools ok? If private, how much are we talking about in fees? Since my daugther is only 3 1/2 - can she already go into a pre-school or something or does she need to go to a daycare?

What about taxes? How much are they?

Thanks for any advice.

What is your housing budget?

Use this to get an idea of how schools perform on standardized tests:

What taxes are you referring to? Property? Sales? Income?

Thanks Charles. I guess I am refering to income tax only as I am not going to buy anything yet there.

With no mortgage to deduct and one child your tax burden should be similar to mine (no kids, and a small mortage). In other words, pretty bad. I pay the same, adding up state and federal, as I would in Europe.

Is $1500/mo your rental budget or your private school budget?

I'm thinking it is housing.

Now, what will $1500 do for a family with a child within a reasonable distance to downtown?

Here's a rough gauge of rentals:

Maybe he can use the train to commute in and find a greater variety of housing options on that budget - in places that may have good schools.

1500$ is my rental budget.

Lets scratch 1500$ and you guys tell me how much I should consider for rental if I want to move in a somewhat decent area with nice schools? Can my daughter already go to a school or does she need to go a daycare? She is 3 1/2.Here in Canada she is going to a daycare.

Thanks

Sales tax for California is 8.25% and in the LA County area it is even higher. If you buy consumable products of anykind accept for most food items you will pay the tax.
