HI, I am moving and I am trying to choose between Ventura CA, Portland OR, Olympia WA. I am a single mother of 2 and am looking at affordability of housing and quality of life. How do CA's afford a house in this area (Ventura)? Can anyone help me out with info and experience? Thanks

By being wealthy, making $150k/yr, sharing with many other people, or renting.

I'm sorry, but yep, it's true, you really do need money. Not just money but money-money. Or depending upon the area, money-money-money.

I think also that some people can afford to live here because they bought more than five years ago. What I see from this forum so far (somebody correct me) is that the people who are happiest, either do have a nice sizeable income AND had equity previously (large equity) to put into a home here; or have been here for some time, and bought when homes were less than half a million dollars.

The three-bedroom in Alta Loma (edited: Wait, that might have been the San Marino home, I'll check with my husband later) that my husband grew up in, and that his parents bought for, I think, $95K (as I recall my FIL telling me), sold about two years ago for $800K.
