Here's a link to the most recent economic report & forecast by the LA Economic Development Corp. (LAEDC), a local non-profit entity that studies the LA economy.

http://www.laedc.org/reports/Forecast-2010-07.pdf

In 2009 LA County lost over 240,000 jobs (almost a 6% decline). In 2010, the LAEDC is forecasting a loss of 44,900 jobs (or 1.2%). Their forecast for 2011 is for a net gain of about 46,000 jobs. Currently, there are about 3.8 million non-farm jobs in LA County for a sense of scale.

Within "Financial Activities" the LAEDC is forecasting for a job loss of 2,900 jobs in that sector in 2010. There are about 215,000 "Finance" positions in LA County as of June 2010, according to official stats.

The state schools, especially UCLA can be hard to get into, especially for an out of state applicant. Not that it is imposible. Also price can be prohibitive for many. That being said it sure doesn't hurt your resume to have those innitials on it.
especially for an out of state applicant - I know this is the case for undergrads for sure, but I was under the impression it didn't matter so much at the grad school/MBA level. (Although, I would agree that it can be hard to get into regardless.)

there are more finance jobs on the east coast than the west coast.LA and SF have the majority of the finance jobs in the West with many hedge funds. You could always complete your MBA online from anywhere through any of the following good schools
university of florida
university of Massachusetts online
Penn State online
University of Maryland
London school of economics online.

In finance from my experience the place to be is on the east coast.Outside of NYC,South Florida is going to be a future hot spot in the finance industry because of Floridas much better tax system.California has taxed itself out of the game and does not seem to be willing to change it.Other states will pass California up in years to come without a serious overhall of the tax system. You cannot have the most productive paying for the mass of little/no work/illegal/I am a waiter/actor.
