Default What's the job situation like in LA?

I just recently relocated to Orlando, FL from Connecticut and before I moved people were telling me how bad the job situation in Orlando was. I was able to find a restaurant job before I moved and then a job in Finance within a month. The job IS rather far, 40 miles each way, but I have an interview on Thursday for something right in Orlando. I moved here because of my girlfriend. However, she will be done with school in the next couple of months and in her field, most of the jobs are in LA. There is a very high chance that come January, she will be out there, and I'll be looking to move. I am wondering what the job situation is like. I have a BA in Economics and Finance and am doing my MBA...currently finishing it online but might consider UCLA. I am currently working as a Financial Analyst. Any advice would be much appreciated.

The job situation is pretty competitive right now, but anyone who is willing or able to take a cut in their usual pay will find something. If you sign-up to attend UCLA you may be able to have a portion of your rent paid by the university and many apartment/rental house owners are happy to accept this arrangement.

i'm guessing the job situation is better in LA than in Orlando, but LA is considerably more expensive. UCLA is also extremely comptetive, i wouldn't count on getting accepted there.

True, and with all the budget cut-backs in the universities it will be even harder. Good point!

Thank you for the replies. UCLA isn't make it or break it for me. The tuition is INSANE!! I actually was looking at the certificate programs, particularly in Accounting, those are only about $500 a course and no admission to the university is requried. My main concern is the job. I want to be able to find something in Finance or Accounting. And trust me, what I'm getting paid here in FLA, I'm sure those salaries don't exist out there

UCLA = Usually Caucasians Living among Asians It is a standard joke around here.

The state schools, especially UCLA can be hard to get into, especially for an out of state applicant. Not that it is imposible. Also price can be prohibitive for many. That being said it sure doesn't hurt your resume to have those innitials on it.

What about the job situation. Could I expect to get a job in Finance/Accounting? I guess that is a rather tough question to answer. I just want to get a feel for the job market.

No one can give you anything more than a calculated guess. You seem to have no problems getting jobs and yes, Fl is tough. You might get lucky in So Ca. It is hard to say, you will not get one. There are always some jobs out there. Now, the reality, probably you will be months without a job...Of course ideally you should start looking right now but then, if your girlfriend doesn't get hired or ends up someplace other than Ca what will you do?

I am starting to look now. But it is hard being so far away and not really knowing anybody. I'm used to going through staffing agencies, but here in FLA I've had 0 luck with them...they just don't call back, or the contact info on the ads is incorrect :-/

What can you lose? You state your not having any luck in Florida. Can't be any worse than here in California. Try here and there.
