Hello everybody,

I join today to ask this question:
I will be working in Van Nuys 8am-4pm. I would like to attend Cal State Long Beach at night. Where is the best place to live to beat the commute? How long would the commute be? I'm also open to public transportation. Thanks.

if you get off at 4, you'll need to make sure your classes start at 7 to make sure you can get to class on time (including driving, parking, and walking to class). the drive will probably would be 1.5 or so, the 405 is absolutely terrible in the evening. you'll probably be in serious congestion from the getty center all the way to long beach.

Wow that's a tough one. From the few times I've driven that route at that time, I'd estimate 2+ hours if nothing bad happens like a accident, lane closure, holiday, etc. Where to live? Culver City maybe.

Van Nuys to Cal state LB at that time of the day would make me saw my head off with a dull and rusty butter knife.

You'd be better off finding a school that was more accommodating to where you live.

This would be a slam dunk if you could attend CSU Northridge instead.

Slightly off topic, but will the California State University system grant in state tuition once you establish your residency or do they "want" the year of employment to show before grantingthe in state rate.

Have you posted this type of question before but with different specifics? Or is there just some total disconnect by people who live out of state?

I wouldn't make that drive even once, and you are considering doing it every weekday? I don't have a specific time for you but it would be literally hours.

Here in Los Angeles we have two types of public transportation:

Option #1: You jump in your car and you join the rest of the public on the freeway, more of them every day.

Option #2: You take the bus (etc.) and it takes three times as long to get anywhere. In your commute it could take 5-6 hours, putting you in Long Beach about 11:00 p.m. That gives a whole new meaning to "night school."

You can make your plan work if you do one of the following:

(A) Attend CSLB and work and live in Long Beach.

(2) Work in Van Nuys and attend CSUN, live in any nearby neighborhood.

Or otherwise please make sure that your employment benefits include psychiatric care.

Thank you all for the reply. I had a good chuckle reading some. I'm interested in CSULB over CSUN because Long Beach offers a graduate program in statistics. It's also more affordable than attending UCLA, which also offers a master's in stat. Graduate classes are usually 2 days a week. If I do go, I'll be taking 1 class per quarter. At the pace of the classes and traffic, I probably be one step away from the grave when I receive my degree. CSULB sounds like a bad idea.

The going setup is to complete your first two years at CSULB/CSUN and then transfer to UCLA to complete your degree. Then if so inclined continue with postgraduate studies at UCLA.

The thing is, there's absolutely no difference between half CSULB/CSUN half UCLA than doing the whole thing at UCLA, except the former is less expensive. You still get the prestige of the UCLA sheep skin. So you might consider the part here part there plan.

Note that I'm a UCLA graduate (all four years) so of course I am biased, and I do not mean to cast any aspersions on CSULB/CSUN grads.
