El Monte is basically a nice growing city.Lots of new development south of Garvey. Many brand new PUDs and townhomes. There is North El Monte and South El monte.I used to live in El Monte near the Nativity Church. There is another area South of Temple City. Lots of shopping at the Valley Mall. There is a Plaza on Peck Road with Chinese Stores. There is the El Monte Bus Terminal. There! I am giving you a grand tour.

Right, i'm just wondering if I am going to get the wheels stolen off my car, or my entire car stolen... or be harassed by 'gangsta's' in the general area...
Just any inkling as to whether or not there is a high crime rate, or high gang rate would be helpful...

I work there (Rosemead) and I don't like the community. It makes me feel like I'm in Vietnam or Mexico City. Trash all over the place, unpaved streets filled with potholes, worn down office buildings, and TONS of horrible drivers. There's also lots of people on welfare there, as whenever I go to the grocery stores close by, there's usually at least 1 familia "paying" with food stamps. But I think the entire area along the hills (Montebello, Hacienda Heights, South El Monte) is next in line for major gentrification. It just looks way too nice for the kind of trash that tends to live there.
That being said, crime seems to have decreased in the area. The only murder I've heard of was a few months ago, when a 16 year old kid was shot dead in broad daylight just south of the 10 freeway. There used to be tons of carjackings and break ins across from my work's parking lot, but now it has decreased to mostly vandalism. I go running almost every night, at 10-11 PM, and have never had any altercations or witnessed any crimes.

The neighborhood where I used to live, lives a man who has his door open all the time, when he is home..He has a huge Pine tree.Every year he would cover this huge Christmas tree with lights,he has an open house,he has the whole house dressed up amazingly with Christmas decorations. He has an open house for maybe a week, doors open, day and night for anyone who wants to look.It is amazing!Wonderful people there. There is also cuban restaurant which I recommend;it's called the Havana, good food.sometimes has entertainemnt.

All of the above are possible in El Monte. There are nicer areas for the money.

El Monte??
If I were you, I not even consider it---Gang ridden, not all that safe, somewhat industrial. It is very diverse with a very high Mexican population.
There are many surrounding areas that are better.
