A lot of residential areas have 2-hour parking areas, no meters.

If you park there, do the cops come and mark your tire so they can come back and check again?

Also, suppose you park in one of these areas for 2 hours. Then you move the car 20 feet forwards, in the same area, for another two hours. Is that allowed or a violation?

Yes, they *can* mark tires, or just note your car being there.

This is one of those "letter of the law" vs. "spirit of the law" type of things. 2 hour parking zones are there to free up parking for other people .... to allow others to patronize the retail areas around parking spots. Moving your car up 20 feet doesn't really turn-over parking spots.

In residential areas, limiting street parking to 2 hours helps keep people from "storing" vehicles on the street.

With that being said .... parking laws are typically municipal - santa monica's parking laws may differ from culver city's - so its a hard question to answer specifically.

they dont always mark the tire, Ive seen them going by each car and recording each license plate in thier note book or electronic note pad, I think they will still ticket you if they notice the same car is still in the area even if you move it over to a different spot.
