Hello all, I'm from Spain and i'm going to santa Barbara on september till december included, that means 4 months. Everybody have told me that I'll need a car cos you need it for everything.
The problem is that I dont really know whats the best way to have one. If I rent a car for four months is too expensive, so I'm thinking to buy an old cheap car and sell it once i'm leaving US.
Do you know if is there another possibility, like a cheap leasing or something like that??
And, do you know any place to buy a cheap car?? And would be possible to buy a car and talk with the owner and give it back to him after the four months, always if the car is in the same conditions, of course??

Thanks in advance
Mario

Are you sure you need a car? Santa Barbara is pretty compact and does have buses; it's also on the train line, so you can just take Amtrak to and from LA and other destinations. Since it sounds like money is an issue you might be better off just buying a bike and taking the bus, and maybe just renting a car for day trips. In any case, I'd wait until you make the move before you make the decision whether to buy a car or not.

Yes I think I need a car, i know it's well comunicated but I'm going with my partner and she'll need the car for going around and we'll need it for travelling as well. besides we're gonna live in Isla Vista and I think that's a bit far from Santa Barbara
Cheers
