Default Apartments in the LAX area?

I'll be moving to LA to work for an airline, and will be based at LAX. My fiancee will be moving out with me, and we're looking for a one bedroom apartment. We have no kids, no pets, and can afford up to $1600 for rent. I've done quite a bit of searching online, but what can I realistically expect for this amount of money in these areas? I'd love a nice a few blocks from a beach, but am not sure that is feasible. Nightlife is great, but not on my doorstep. (I'm 32).

Friends in the area have recommended El Segundo, Culver City and Playa del Rey as decent areas within a short drive to the airport. I also have heard some of the beach cities (Hermosa, Huntington) are not that bad of a drive but I don't want a terribly long commute, since I may be "on call" at times.

I'll be coming out to LA in a couple of weeks to scope out areas, and would appreciate any suggestions of where to look.

Thanks!
