Default Apartments in/around Northridge

Hello all, as many of you know I moved to LA about 3 months ago. Well, after spamming my resume all over SoCal and going on several interviews I was offered and accepted a job with a great company in Northridge. I will be starting around mid-september.

My base starting pay will be around 50k/yr but I expect to earn a bit more than that due to the company working lots of overtime. I'd like to find a large studio (is there such a thing? lol) or a 1bd/1bth in a nice area of Northridge or a nice surrounding community. My priorities are in order: Safety, Modern/New/Clean unit, Cost. The extreme upper limit of what i'd like to spend is around 1200/mo.

I've been looking on pad mapper and my budget seems to be in line with the area, and I've seen a lot of nice ads but the one thing i'm not so sure of is how safe the neighborhoods are.

Basically the goal is a nice apartment where I am unlikely to get robbed or shot and i'd like to keep the commute time to under 30 minutes. Preferably way way under.

What suggestions do you have?

Post the intersections or cross streets.

In general, it gets more desirable north and west.

I've seen a lot around Nordhoff and Topanga that look reasonable. How is that area? Also was looking at some a few blocks south of the reservoir.

There's both good and bad areas. It would take hours to post a list of which is which. Why don't you just drive around and look for rent signs and stop at the ones you like. I don't see why you couldn't just look around and tell for yourself which are safe and which are not.

Clues:

1. Lots of graffiti and "slammed" (lowered) cars - unsafe

2. Lots of BMWs and Lexus parked nearby - safe

Yes safe.

A few blocks south of the reservoir is where I grew up (Saticoy and Fallbrook). It is safe.

Thanks guys! At some point as one poster suggested I will just go up there and drive around for a day and find the nice areas. But sometimes in the city looks can be deceiving. I'm also going to take a gander at lapd crime maps and compare that with the locations of the apartments.
