Here's a map with the "rough" borders of the neighborhoods to help you in your search

From Sylmar to San Pedro. I know, it makes no sense. I wasn't the one who helped annex other places to make LA as geographically large as it is now.

Separate cities SURROUNDING the city of Los Angeles are in red. Notice how San Fernando, Beverly Hills, Culver City, and Santa Monica are ALL surrounded by the City of Los Angeles? Don't try to make out the logic of it. It just is.

I accepted it a long long time ago.

How much money are you willing to spend on rent?
Where do you plan to work?
What industry do you work in?
Will you have a car?
Kids?
Give us a frame of reference of what you consider "bad" Considering that a lot of people in LA move from war torn 3rd world countries, their version of "bad" is way different from someone that lived in French Lick, IN.

Sorry to be so stern, its so we can better serve you

Why Downtown LA? Will you be working there or is this just your point of reference?

closest cities to downtown LA are Vernon and HP (huntington park). but if PT is your main concern, anywhere within a good 5 to 8 mi. radius of downtown is served well by bus and train. you can also opt for an area with good train service, but poor bus service, or visa versa.

the system in LA is expanding so you can live a bit further out than before.
