10 Worst Places to Live

6. Los Angeles, California
Population: 3,849,378

If you don't really care about breathing, Los Angeles is a great place. The metro area that stretches from Long Beach to Riverside has the worst ozone pollution in the country, according to the American Lung Association's State of the Air report for 2010. Along with being tops in ozone pollution, L.A. is ranked third in year-round particle pollution, and fourth in short-term particle pollution.

Ozone is the byproduct of pollutants released by cars, chemical plants, refineries, and other sources. It exists naturally in the upper atmosphere of the Earth, but when emitted at ground level, it's considered a harmful outdoor pollutant. Inhaling ozone can cause wheezing, coughing, chest pain, throat irritation, congestion, and can make people more susceptible to respiratory illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Think about that next time you drive in Los Angeles, which also lays claim the worst traffic in the country.

This is really disappointing. What happened?

Two generations ago when you lived here, the harmful components of the smog were the photochemical components such as NOx and VOC. Those are greatly reduced nowadays.

But now the ozone and microparticulate particles are up, and you know the reason for that.

I guess that's where I got confused. It was the reduction in photochemical components I'd keyed-in on. I knew great strides had been made but didn't take into account cars, cars and more cars.

So the CA unique fuels, catalytic converters and other anti-polution measures are likely working but can't get ahead of the influx which also creates the need for more agricultural production, manufacturing, housing, et al.

Time to lock the gates!

I would hope lack o water would drive the gate locking, but that makes too much sense.

What is even more tragic is the attempt by out-of-state oil and power companies to stop California from implementing stricter air quality controls by putting Proposition 23 on the ballot. They have no interest whatsoever in how deadly the pollution levels are in the Los Angeles basin and Central Valley because $ is what they are concerned about. It is noteworthy that Republicans and the Tea baggers are financing the effort to allow the lowering of pollution standards. Great Americans, huh?

And it's also note worthy that large industries and corporations have off-shored so many jobs and laid off so many people that it has also negativelyu impacted the economy, not just of California but the nation as a whole. Greed has over-ridden love of country. Meanwhile, politicians pander to the open wallets and are most concerned about re-election or achieving the next higher office. Selflessness appears to be a lost art.

On the flip side, there's a whole contingent that thinks more government is what we need and applauds the notion of opening our doors to any who may knock while having no trouble taking from those who work to give to those who don't. They approve of and campaign to establish policies diluting the hard work ethic, independence and veritable soul of America that made it first in the world while watching and permitting our language and unique culture dissolve and get shoved aside slowly but surely.

More great Americans all!

It's not blown out of proportion when you live in L.A. and feel the effects of the smog/pollution. It's a very real problem that you can see everyday.
