I am 21 and moving to Los Angeles within the next two months. After going out west to apartment hunt, I'm deciding between living in West Hollywood and Santa Monica. I'm somewhat torn between the more urban feeling and central location of WeHo and the beachside laid back aura of Santa Monica. I am a NY girl at heart, but I also spend considerable time right next to the beach in Greece during the year, so both areas appeal to me. Since I haven't lived in either neighborhood, I was wondering if anyone who has can give me some pros and cons of either area, because my feelings about both neighborhoods were based on a relatively short visit, and may simply be misconceptions.

So...regarding traffic and getting around in general, local lifestyle, safety, nightlife, general surroundings and atmosphere...any thoughts? Any local help would be appreciated!

Santa Monica is not laid back. Its busy and congested.

There is a lot of traffic around the beach in SM on the weekends. SM is relatively safe. Neither SM nor West Hollywood are patrolled by LAPD, so thats definitely a plus.

remember this, it's easier to drive east in the mornings than west and opposite in the afternoons. weho to west LA can easily take 45 minutes or longer in the morning.
