Commute to Irvine from Santa Moinca? How Long?
Hi, am considering a job with a commute from Santa Monica to Irvine. How long a drive in traffic? Thanks!

Regular hours will be very tough. Can you flex your time to work at 6-6:30 AM and leave 3PMish?
Monitor Sigalert.com - Personalized Traffic Reports for a week or two during the hours you are considering to get a feel of what the traffic will be like.

I replied in the other thread but I'll reply here too since its getting more traffic. mentioned this to my wife who used to work in Irvine by the airport and she said someone used to make that drive. If he left at 5:45am, it took about 45 minutes. That's with no accidents and weather of course. That was also about 5 years ago so it may be worse by now. Also, leaving any later, like 6:30am, and I'm sure the traffic is exponentially worse.

on the 405 at rush hour? you're talking 1 1/2-2 hour commute. if i were you, i'd move to a coastal city in orange county, or turn down the job.

Second on turning down the job. That's not worth it at all. The only connection to both cities is 40 miles of the world's most crowded freeway: the 405. It's not just long, there's not a day that would go by where there won't be spectacular accidents involving big rigs and/or motorcycles. It goes through dense urban areas like you've never seen.

You'll be taking the 405 which is one the busiest freeways in the WORLD. You are looking at 90 min drive. Doing this everyday, its really get you.

Yikes!
I got a spontaneous migraine reading the post title. Move to Irvine or find a closer job.

One option is to take the 73 toll road. That could provide some time relief. We have driven it when driving to Santa Monica from Irvine, I can't remember what road it hooks up with on the north end close to Santa Monica though. Either way it was pretty much car free when we drove it. I am unsure though about the A.M. commute as we drove it later in the day around 4 or 5 P.M.
Depending on the job it may be worth it. But it will be as Sorcerer mentioned a real migraine causative commute, if not soul deadening and life robbing. Depends on where you are in your stage of life. When I was young, long, unpredictable commutes didn't bother me very much. In fact if the job was amazing enough, I thought it was like a badge of honor. Of course that wore off in a couple of years even with the best of books on tape, talk radio and tunes. All of which I would highly recommend if you decide to do this :-). The ones with the spiritual emphasis really helped!! LOL.
