if the jags move to LA, i propose that the feline predator theme be retained, with the new franchise rebranded as the "LA Cougars" in honor of the region's ample supply of fetching middle-aged women on the prowl.
The NFL wouldn't bother to protect the Jacksonville Jaguars name/logo. If they move, it's hardly like the NFL would go back there anytime soon. Cleveland had far more history and proved it could sell out consistently; the only issue was the stadium. And Jacksonville's attendance is mediocre at best, despite a team that has a winning record as a franchise.

And "Jaguars" make an appropriate nickname for a Los Angeles team -- historically, the range of the jaguar included the southern half of California.

Conversely, it's hard to imagine any Los Angeles ownership group wanting to keep the names Vikings or Bills in the event one of those teams moves.

I had no idea the Jaguar used to exist as far north as the southern U.S. You learn something new every day.

Very interesting that the native American Jaguar did not ever reside in Florida per the link, so historically the LA Jaguars would be an appropriate name. There are mountain lions in the foothills so the LA Cougars would be a cool name, too.

But, based on recent developments it appears that the Chargers will return to LA so the issue of what to call the NFL team may be a moot point.

Yep, "Cougars" is pretty much ruined as a sports nickname for the foreseeable future.

And "Mountain Lions" is fairly cumbersome. Besides, Detroit would block the use of the name (even though it's clearly an African Lion on their helmet - a creature even more lost than a jaguar in Jacksonville!).

that's probably true. but i'm sure the jags' die-hard fans would appreciate the gesture, even if the team never returns.

interesting, i didn't know that.

but if the jags do move to LA, it might make more sense to start fresh with a brand new nickname and identity so that the team isn't perceived by some fans as being recycled.

i agree that it looks increasingly likely that the chargers will move north, but then again, sometimes news gets leaked to the media as a smokescreen for very different maneuverings behind the scenes. a savvy businessman would rather lie in the weeds until the time is right to make a big announcement so that he doesn't ruin his leverage or anger the fans who are about to get screwed.

in other words, while it certainly appears that the chargers might be moving from SD, i think the other relocation candidates are all still in play.

i like this suggestion. the team mascot could be a lower-middle-class white dude riding a lifted truck down the sideline and shooting affliction t-shirts into the stands during commercial breaks while korn or limp bizkit blares over the loudspeakers.
