You need to learn some geography. I do NOT live in Marrietta. I live in Murrieta California which is a very nice city in the Temecula Valley 60 miles north of San Diego.

I agree it is a great idea for him to get out and explore a little. Then he would discover parts of the country where they never have to say "I wish there was not so much graffitti". It is hard to drive more than a few blocks in many large sections of LA without seeing it.

Funny - I was there from 84-86. I liked Iowa too. Des Moines is a nice city and I could live there again if circumstances were different. Big plus for me was the air quality. Seems there's always a breeze blowing and little/no haze or smog hanging in the air. You can see for miles.

Most of the Midwest might not be for you culturally. However, you might find Minneapolis, MN and Madison, WI to be pleasant surprises culturally speaking. I can't help you with the weather. They are also beautiful cities.

Rochester, MN & Madison, WI have perennially been at the top of MONEY magazine's annual 'best places to live' surveys for ages, and they're both a lot safer than Chicago, where my parents grew up before moving to LA in 1950.

Personally speaking, I'd also consider Indianapolis, which is a growing city with a pro-business and pro middle-class mentality as opposed to the extremists in Sacramento; plenty of nightlife and very distinct neighborhoods, and being three hours away from Chicago certainly makes for a nice weekend away if you'd like to get away for a weekend or whatever, as well as somewhat milder winters.

Kind of funny that MONEY magazine crowns two places up in the frozen tundra as the best places to live.

And eyebrows may be be raised when we fail to acknowledge that "pro-business" and "pro-middle class" don't necessarily describe the same economic milieu.

The fact that Madison & Rochester have cold winters is 100% irrelevant as it relates to being great places to live & raise a family.

I like Madison. Its one of my favorite towns in the midwest. Never been to Rochester but is close to Minneapolis. Madison and Minneapolis are probably the most west-coast like towns in the midwest, culturally speaking.

The Midwest is an infinitely superior place to raise a family. Educationally California is far behind for the K-12 grades. Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Missouri are all in the top seven states by SAT score. California is a lowly 34th between West Virginia and Alaska.
