To answer your questions, and more (lived in pv for over 20 years, also lived in berkeley a few years and torrance a year)
-fires are not an issue. yes, there have been a couple in recent years, but what people forget is that all that burned was unoccupied grass, with a couple homes being slightly damaged.
-there is a medical clinic in pv, and there is a private hospital in torrance 5 minutes from northern pv as well as a kaiser permanente in lomita thats also 5 minutes from the eastern edge of pv.
- There are 4 cities in "pv," and 2 (rolling hills and pve) are extremely restrictive in what you can do, whereas the other two (rhe and rpv) are pretty relaxed about restrictions.
-pv is a fairly diverse area, but pretty much everyone is at least economically comfortable. hondas, toyotas etc are common, but so are bmws and range rovers. snobbyness is very limited (no one likes a snob), and the area is VERY relaxed and safe.
-there is no traffic within pv. well, i suppose on pv drive north at school drop off and pick up times and rush hour, it might add 5 minutes to your commute (no biggie)
-there are multiple major supermarkets within palos verdes. within a ten minute drive from my house i can get to a trader joes, pavilions, ralphs, bristol farms, cvs, riteaid, 711, chevron, etc. of those places, 3/4+ are within 5 minutes away.
-the schools are AMAZING! colleges literally fight to get our students. every years tons of kids from each highschool go to ivy league schools, ucla/uc berkeley/ucsd, usc, etc.
-parking is always free and always available (not true in most of la county though)
-getting to the freeway can be a drag if you live in a corner of pv farthest isolated from the freeways (20-40 minutes in some cases), but many homes are only 5-10 minutes from the 110 and 15-20 minutes from the 405, and generally you will make good time once you hit the freeway. your rush hour drive home? you could be in heavy traffic until you get back into the south bay (name for the cities including and around pv, by some definitions all the way out to lawndale/carson).
-schools again: NO ONE in pv pays for private schools, that would be insane. why move to an area with amazing local schools just to pay for private? honestly, our public schools are better than other areas private schools, and pv folks have a strong pride in this and often donate to the pv school system long after their kids have graduated. you will be forever glad you enrolled your kid at palos verdes peninsula hs or pvhs.
=also, there are 2 excellent community colleges close by, which can save a family easily ~50k/year between relocation costs and tuition if your child does their first two years of college at el camino cc or harbor cc (located in torrance and pedro/wilmington, respectively)
-plenty of horse trails, running trails, cliffs/bleach trails/cliff trails...you get the idea
-decent variety of restaurants on the hill (thai, indian, dominos, taco bell, korean, mexican, chinese...all top grade! and plenty of great places RIGHT off the hill as well
-come visit right away if youre thinking about moving here. there's not much (or any, besides the terranea resort) night life, but its quiet, safe, secluded...how we like it and how you'll grow to love it. if you want night life, thats only 20-40 minutes away. but you LIVE in paradise
-ive just returned home after being in berkeley for a few years, so im feeling a bit nostalgic. SO happy to be back!
-any more questions? feel free to ask and ill answer any of them for you.

^ Thank you! We're not looking for any gay scene, we have two small boys and other than going out to dinner, our lives revolve around our two kids.

Thanks again!

Also, not a lot of places to eat on The Hill.

PV is well know for all of it's microclimates. Some area will be clear, some will be in the marine layer, some have a breeze, some get hotter
