Rented my unpermitted garage to a "friend" 2 years ago. OK, that was stupid and wrong. The "friend" reported me to the LAHD, who found him deserving of $18,300 relocation fees. He's one guy living in one room. He got an MD friend to provide a 2 line letter saying he's disabled due to back pain. Based on that, LAHD makes me pay $18300? WHAT THE HECK??!!!
Went to the MD's office (I'm an MD too) and he tells me it was "a mistake", but LAHD won't hear it. The doc wouldn't provide me a letter of course.
I have a lawyer who tells me to fight it which means the case will go to the city attorney and I could face additional fines...
I admit it was wrong to rent out the garage, and I will comply with the city on that, but THIS IS WRONG & OBSCENE. HAS ANYONE OUT THERE FOUGHT THIS RELOCATION FEE FIASCO? Thank you.

I wish I had answers. I'm posting a response just to offer some encouragement. It is mind-boggling and beyond outrageous that you are being forced to pay this. I hope it all works out. It sounds obscene. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Sorry for the platitude but, "No good deed goes unpunished."
