I will be in LA in early March for a few days, primary objective is to see as much art and as much of the major galleries as possible. I have not been to LA before and have no idea what area to look for a hotel in. I would like to find an area of L.A that is gentrified, arty, edgy, interesting bars, eating holes, creative vibe....comparable areas might be former East Berlin or Lower East Side NYC etc.....

Any suggestions as to what area that might sound like in L.A?

Any further suggestions as to what lodgings must be worth checking out around there?

THANKS.

the major galleries seem to be on Melrose and La Brea, south of West Hollywood. And of course there's the famous Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills. However, LA isn't the mecca for young designers/artists the way that NYC is, so don't get your expectations too high. Probably any of the hotels in West Hollywood like the Andaz or London would be the most convenient.

actually, art galleries are spread out all over the city. there are a clusters in culver city, downtown, and north hollywood to name a few more places. some of these neighborhoods also have 'art walks', so maybe try to align your visit to attend some of these art walks.

If you are looking to stay in West Hollywood I would suggest the Standard. It's a funky and eclectic hotel with a great location and close to alot of galleries on La Brea and the Hollywood area.
