the main st area isn't very alternative, it's too expensive to be that way. however, venice, it's neighbor to the south still remains very alternative although it has become quite gentrified in the past decade or so.

regarding downtown santa monica, i can't stress enough about the traffic, especially summer weekends. additionally, i've never heard anything good about the management companies that run many of the buildings in the area.

There is tons to do in Santa Monica and with someone with your salary you can definitely find a great apartment in the Santa Monica area. [mod cut: advertising]

What's nice about Santa Monica is that for most people they can walk to bars and restaurants from their apartments or houses, or it is just a short drive. Another great area to consider is Brentwood where a lot of young professionals tend to live in. Also Venice and further south in Manhattan Beach are all areas that you might want to look into as well.
