Default Reality of LA's 'black neighborhoods'

The blackest neighborhoods in the LA area are now View Park, Ladera Heights, Baldwin Hills, Windsor Hills, Carson's Dominguez Hills and Altadena. Compton, Watts, South Central are now Latino neighborhoods.

So, just what is a 'black neighborhood' like in LA? More affluent than the average white neighborhood in one of the most affluent countries in the world. Somehow, perceptions of gangs and 'Colors' still linger as the sole defining aspect.

Here are some facts: Ladera Heights is 70% black and it's (only) ZIP code 90056 touts a higher per capita income than Rancho Palos Verdes' 90274.
Ladera: Livingchoices.com: Real Estate - New Homes, Homes for Sale, Apartment Rentals
Rancho Palos Verdes: Livingchoices.com: Real Estate - New Homes, Homes for Sale, Apartment Rentals
Ladera also has a lower rate of poverty. ...but perceptions and assumptions tell us otherwise. There is a lot of envy-based resentment and that always seems to come from 'below'.

More facts: Carson's 90746 covers half of the city and 5 distinct, overwhelmingly black neighborhoods. Carson borders Compton as well as Torrance. Here is the crime rate for Carson's 'black' section
Livingchoices.com: Real Estate - New Homes, Homes for Sale, Apartment Rentals
Now look at the crime rate for 90210

Now look at the crime rate for neighboring Bixby Knolls in Long Beach

As far as Carsonites are concerned, 'black neighborhood' means safer... overwhelmingly safer. In fact, Carson's 90746 has nearly the same crime rate as million-dollar 'white' Laguna Beach

It's time to stop clinging to old perceptions and assumptions. It's time for black folks in LA to take as much pride in their neighborhoods as other do in their more dangerous or poorer areas.

I agree but those area still have crime issues and some of gang members still around or are either in prison, dead, got out of the gang system in search of a better life through religion Christianity or Islam Or moved out of the city with the Loved ones again in search of a better life where its affordable to own a home In such places in like Palmdale and Lancaster in the Antelope Valley, Bakersfield, Orange County and Ventura County(to a lessor degree) Riverside County communities of Riverside, Corona, Temecula, Murrieta, Perris, Mira Loma, San Jacinto/ and Hemet while in San Bernadino its Victorville, Apple Valley, Adelanto, Hesperia, Rialto, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga,Highland Ontario and Chino Hills want a new or newer home more opportunities to own.

Many come back to LA for the cultural institutions: churches, restaurants, night life that LA has to offer and many still have relatives who choose to stay because of jobs climate, custody issues with spouses, health issues (heat and cold) or love where they live.

Others like my self is are moving to cities with large and stable communities Like Chicago, New York, Detroit, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Raleigh, Durham, Winston-Salem , Charlotte, Charleston SC, where opportunities abound, plus the southern and midwestern cities area Affordable and unfortunately thats the way it is.

For those who cannot afford these areas, there are no 'affordable' safe areas, this is true, but Carson Livingchoices.com: Real Estate - New Homes, Homes for Sale, Apartment Rentals is safer than all of the places you mention. This posting isn't about 'cheap neighborhoods,' it's about how affluent and/or safe 'the black neighborhood' has become in the LA area. LA is just expensive in general. People who can't afford to stay or want bigger homes for reasonable money must leave - black, white or otherwise. Unfortunately, a move to any of the cities you list is actually a move to HIGHER crime. Just plug in any of those zip codes at the tail end of the above URL. You'd be surprised. ;-)

It's so difficult for even blacks to accept that some black neighborhoods are just nicer... richer or safer. Black should celebrate the fact and others should face it.

City-data's own facts state Rancho PV income edges out Ladera Heights. Carson is not safer than ALL the cities mentioned. Get real. You have an agenda. State it in interesting terms and maybe folks will listen - you don't have to be combative.

I guess I can be rather blunt. I really get going when I find new info or info that goes against common perceptions, that's all. The point is, in spite of general assumptions, RPV and Ladera have similar per caps & some sites have Ladera's being slightly higher. The point remains the same - black neighborhoods aren't what they used to be and that's a good thing.

Carson's 90746 ZIP is safer than all the cities the person above names. I should've specified the ZIP. I don't believe City-data breaks it down to ZIPS. Again, the point remains the same, contrary to popular believe, there are some black neighborhoods which are quite safe... safer, even, than many other, more affluent areas. Compare it to Laguna Beach's ZIP code in terms of crime. (linked in original post). Them's just the facts. I can't state it any more nicely.

I get my reality from federal crime statistics provided by websites such as American Renaissance.

Yes, James T, and in this current year of 2007, most of those crime statistics are now showing that the mass majority of crime is being done by the mexicans ,illeagal or not, that are now dominating those formal African American impovrished neighborhoods...so your comment is unrelative due to the fact that the poster is talking about the success of the current, prosperous neighborhoods of the current African American community in L.A. presently now in 2007. Wake up out of the dark ages and stop trying to continue to blame crime in L.A. on blacks still, when facts and statistics clearly prove that it is now the heavy transition of mexican gangs and mexicans that are dominating the lower income neighboorhoods of L.A. such as compton/watts, inglewood, and basiclly all of east L.A. Also even local comunities such as san bernardino and riverside which results in pushing the blacks out either to blacker and cheaper cities like atlanta, detroit, and memphis, or to nicer communities in L.A. such as baldwin hills for example, they even made a new reality show on BET about it that is the black version of "the hills," lol maybe conservative types like James T, need to whatch that show sometime. African Americans are mainly moving back to Atlanta where it is cheaper for them to live and growing at a very rapid pace and they wont have to be labled as "gangbangers" due to the fact that it is the largest predominatly black and very succesful city and they can be looked at as normal middle class, tax paying, americans like any other caucasion american in this country...

I'm not "trying to continue to blame crime in L.A. on blacks still." I was simply making reference to DOJ crime statistics. BTW, your post seems very anti-Mexican. Perhaps you should attend a tolerance class at your local B'nai Brith chapter. Shalom.

Living in East L.A., blaming Mexicans (legal or otherwise) for crimes is stupid. That's like blaming whites for crimes in white neighborhoods because they are white there. (and btw, many Mexicans are white). East L.A IS predominately Latino/Mexican/Hispanic/Jewish/Koren/Japanese/Cambodian/Chinese/etc, So it would be expected that if any crimes were committed, it would be by some one that is in this area. But to blanket label them (us) as gang members or gang bangers is the same BS you are listing as blacks.

Statistics are only gained from those items that are reported, not from the factual.

btw, last i heard, don't move to washington d.c. every black person is labelled as a crack addict and not allowed within a block of the white house.

Shall we continue with the sterotypes and rumors?
