Default Help! Got a job in South Central, need to find an apt!

Hi, my name is Kevin and I just graduated with an Architectural Engineering degree in Missouri. I landed a job for a large general contractor out of Newport Beach for $60k/yr. However, I was assigned to High school #7 prioject which is on cottage stin Huntington park. I'm assuming this isn't an ideal place to work or live but I have no choice with the job location. Please give me an idea of how much I can afford to spend on my salary and where I will be able to live which will be safe yet be accessible to drive to work. I will leave in the morning around 6am and come home around 5-6pm. I am also looking for a place with a fun night life and younger crowd. I have been looking to to Santa Monica fairly heavily but i'm worried that taking the 10 to the 110 may be a nightmare.

P.S. I will be headed down in my car on the 2nd of the year and I start on the 10th.

Thanks for your help, I will answer any questions that may help guide advice!

We can't tell you what you can afford - too many variables: student loans, car payments, savings, 401(k), Roth IRA, insurance, etc.

$60k/36 is around $1700/month using a rule of thumb 1/3 income for housing.

Check out the metro blue line to Long Beach.

You could also take the 105 west to the South Bay, but I think it is crowded in the PM

You might try just heading west on big streets.

Well Huntington Park isn't quite south central is it? Santa Monica is much too far away and also too expensive.

^Downey's kind of boring isn't it

Oh, wait, how about downtown LA? That really is near huntington park, and has a fun night life and younger crowd! And you should be able to afford something there.
