Considering LA has over 10 oil refineries, I'm just curious how these plants are running these days and if there are prospects for upgrades in the future or potential shutdowns (I know refining is losing money in North America these days). It's funny how people equate Houston with oil but forget that LA is one of the largest refining zones in the country.

i remember they were reducing capacity a few years ago when gas prices spiked to almost $5/gallon. other than that, we don't hear much about the refineries in the news. the only other time i even think about the refineries is when i'm on the beach path and i can see the big tankers off the coast a few miles unloading to the pipeline that feeds the chevron refinery in el segundo.

I know its impossible to get a job there, even w/ a contractor. Sad, considering thats the "industry" out here. Then again, if you happen to be a relative of a foreman, its easy. Even if your an illegal.

Any word on how Chevron and Exxon refineries are doing cashflow wise? Is the job market still poor, or is it just ultra-competitive?

sorry i had to laugh at this... its true i am a relative and i did. Its tough to get these oil industry jobs because theres a stack of applications 10 feet high for these jobs that pay a livable wage. Everybody i work with is a cousin of a consultant or a nephew of a pusher etc . It is what it is as they like to say out here in the oil field.

we'll the difference is most people in LA dont even know about oil or oil jobs hell most people that i know dont even know what a pump jack or derrick looks like. Having lived in Texas I can tell you its in the culture down there everybody has a friend or family member that works in the oil industry. Strange meeting chicks at a bar and she knows details about h2s and things of that nature that a 20 something shouldnt know.
