I'm mid 20s male planning to relocate to LA. I can pay up to $1300 a month in rent, maybe a little higher, which includes utilities. I am interested in Sherman Oaks or North Hollywood because I will be working in Sherman Oaks.

Is there a young Jewish community in Sherman Oaks/North Hollywood. I don't mean synagogues, etc. I mean more of a singles community and stuff to do.

I know that the West Side has a lot more of a young Jewish community, but am curious about that part of the Valley (at least until I get my bearings and make some money).

Yes, plenty of Jews spread all over LA....though the "historic" LA jewish neighborhood is the Fairfax district (techinally NOT the westside). Plenty of Jews in the SF Valley as well.

If I had to pick an area to live, I'd pick Sherman Oaks over No. Hollywood. Of course, that is my "opinion" but I view No. Hollywood as more of an "emerging" area where redevelopment is finally taken hold. Sherman Oaks is more established with more curb appeal. But you should also consider Studio City which is right between the two. Studio City has more "nightlife" for the Valley and is very comparable to Sherman Oaks in terms of curb appeal.

I looked into Studio City, my only concern is the rent might be slightly beyond my price range for a 1 bedroom. Any hints on an apartment complex in Studio City?

Snoygft: I have not rented for nearly 6 years so I am not your BEST resource on apt prices. But in my exp. rents in Sherman Oaks and Studio City should not be too much different. On your budget I think it is possible in both SO and Studio City, though No. Hollywood is MORE affordable.

You could also consider "Valley Village" which is a nice area immediatley north of Studio City. This area is typically more single-family homes but they do have some rentals. If you see it on Craigslist you should take a look. It's a nice area..close to NoHollywood and Studio City, etc.

Encino has a high Jewish population. It's right next to Sherman Oaks. It's very nice and you could definitely find something for $1300.

Thanks for all the advice. I heard Encino was slightly more family oriented, but of course that's all hearsay.

I didn't even think of Valley Village, though I think it tends to be more Orthodox Jews, but I'm fine with that.

I'm going to keep checking on apartments in Sherman Oaks and Studio City, maybe even the eastern edge of Encino, which is close to Sherman Oaks.

I'll sign a 1 year lease and then reevaluate if necessary.

Thanks again. Any more advice is gladly appreciated.

Encino is MORE family oriented...NOT as hot a spot for singles (Jew and Gentile alike) as say Sherman Oaks, Studio City, and No. Hollywood.

Here's a link to the Jewish Journal. They did an analysis of what areas of LA County are most heavily Jewish. The study was done in 2007.

That's interesting because although the Valley has a large Jewish population, you always hear of the westside such as Bev Hills, Santa Monica, Westwood, etc.

I grew up in the valley and it's common knowledge that Jews live along Ventura Blvd (Tarzana, Encino, Sherman Oaks). I've never heard that the Westside is a Jewish area.
