1) Where is the best place along the coast to see the sunset?

2) Can you recommend a decent photographer on the westside? This is for family photos, not headshots or anything like that.

Personally I like Torrance Beach with Palos Verdes in the background:

But there are numerous spots along the coast to watch great sunsets. On the West Side just take Hwy 1 heading toward Malibu. There are numerous pullouts. Take a look at this shoot near the Pier at sunset: Yes, It's Real | Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnmueller/3717030401/ - broken link)

This photographer's work looks pretty good. You cna check out his website here: http://www.johnbmueller.com/index2.php?v=v1

Agree with MtnSurfer. Torrance Beach & Redondo Beach are nice for this.

Also, the entire Palos Verdes Peninsula, especially around the lighthouse, and the area of the Korean Bell in San Pedro.

Yes, Palos Verdes at the Point Vicente lighthouse is great. Plus you can watch whales migrating from there as well. And I've seen some pretty amazing sunsets from the San Pedro side of PV. These were taken near the bell at that park:

Here's sunrise at the lighthouse:
