Hello there. My name is Joseph and I was wondering how is the rock music scene in LA? Is it better than SF and SD? I mean, do you really live that rock atmosphere you look on tv?

Yep. According to officials the rock scene in Los Angeles is 9% better than San Francisco's and 13% better than San Diego's.

LA is the music capital of the world. Although many other cities have many music venues and may be known for a particular scene, no city has anywhere near the presence of musicians, venues, studios, and record labels. In fact, the two largest record companies in the world are located in LA.

LA's music scene is vast and wide, esp. within the rock universe.

NYC wins hand down for jazz (followed by N.O.). Chicago for the blues (some might argue Austin). But given LA's size and the depth of the talent/music bizz it's got a pretty good sampling of everything.

Well it seems LA IS the music capital of the world. But would you consider it bohemian? For ex are there underground artists?

Yes...beyond the mainstream music industry you will find plenty of places that support underground artists/bands.

Perhaps not as deep and wide as the golden days of SST Records and Slash Records but you can find plenty of places that will cater to an eclectic, underground taste.

Here are a few:

Spaceland in Silverlake
Club Spaceland

The Echo & Echoplex in Echo Park
The Echoplex - Los Angeles Music Venues - Echo Park

The Smell in Downtown LA
The Smell

For weekly music bookings (both mainstream and not so mainstream) check the LA Weekly:
Los Angeles Events - Los Angeles Entertainment Guide

Well, considering the music industry is just about dead, that's about all there is left.

I would say LA & NYC are the best places for underground and experimental music. It's harder to get decent shows here without knowing someone, however.
