Yay Charles, I have to wait to exalt your rep, sez City-data.

It's not geezerhood to wish true diversity of the urban/suburban/rural landscape. Most planners agree that business core in the urban center, suburban residential around it with industrial in the non-residential boonies, plus rural at the far edges for sustenance and recreation are the ideal. Los Angeles once had this; now it does not, lost just within the last 40 years.

These pix are specific to the San Fernando Valley and its western edges. After its initial agricultural phase was developed out of the mix, the Valley was once known as the recreational paradise outpost of the whole So Cal basin, with mountains, open space, a lake (yes there once was one around Hansen Dam) and lots and lots of horseback riding. No more. This is not what the Valley is known for now. I think the Valley is known for . . . gangs. . . now. Hardly progress.

There was a lake just north of the intersection of Canoga and the 118. I'll get pics of that up here soon.

Heading to a BBQ here on my California vacation.

later.

Default Twin Lakes Chatsworth

Here's a shot of one of two lakes located just north of Canoga and the 118. It was a resort for camping and fishing. The homes are still there but not the lakes.

Here's a neat shot of the northwest San Fernando Valley, view looking northwest, 1924.
I think the intersection in the foreground is Sherman Way and Winnetka. Sherman Way has the palm trees and the structures are northwest of the intersection. You can see Roscoe, Canoga, Saticoy, and Mason. You can see the railroad around Plummer and Canoga.

Here's another neat one. Woodland Hills, 1924 looking north over Topanga and Ventura. Back then Woodland Hills was called Girrard and was renamed Woodland Hills around 1948 (I think) after the Woodland Hills Country Club in Girrard.

Those white buildings in the background on Topanga are (I think) Canoga Park High School (I think it was Owensmouth High School then, not sure).

Some absolutely fantastic "Then and Now" photos in the Conejo Valley. The "Then" photos are stills from a movie.

Scroll down to the Conejo Valley and Calabasas:

That is a great shot. Given that the SFV was mostly built out by the 1960's it's easy to forgot how much of it was vacant land less than 100 years ago.

I had no idea Canoga Park High School dated back to 1914 (when it was called Owensmouth High). See wikipedia entry.

Also, Kurtwood Smith (who played the father on "That '70's Show") was senior class president in 1961.
