Going for final job interview in Northridge. When I was there I was told quite a few people who worked at this company lived in Santa Monica and only had a 20 minute or so morning commute. Just wanted to check if this was realistic and if there were any other areas that would be a "reverse commute" to northridge such as Brentwood.
Also, as a sidenote, since I'm middle aged, are there any areas where there might be a few more people my age...Sherman Oaks seems to be a little older. I just love the water a lot thus the appeal of Santa Monica. |

The 20 minute commute story is completely false. They must really be interested in you to tell that fib. Santa Monica to Northridge will take at least 45 minutes to an hour during rush hour, if not longer in my estimation.
Santa Monica is nice, but there are nice areas of the Valley to live too that would be more convenient and that would allow you to get to the beach communities on the weekends. Woodland Hills and Calabasas are particularly nice and close to Northridge. |

in the morning, Santa Monica to Northridge (405N to 118W) in 20-30 minutes is right. in the afternoon, it's impossible.

The 405 north from Santa Monica is fine in the morning. Everyone is trying to get to work in SM and West LA, not go the other way. You'll be driving against traffic. It's similar to the 10 east vs the 10 west situation in the San Gabriel Valley.

10 years ago it was about 25-30 minutes. That was 405 north to nordhoff across to CSUN.
