Torrance is not in Long Beach. They are seperate cities with a few cities in between. The shortest distance between the two is around a 15-20 minute drive. From the extreme end of Long Beach to the opposite extreme end of Torrance is a minimum 30 minute drive via the 405, and probably longer than that.

Torrance is a residential suburb with suburban shopping centers. Long Beach is California's 5th or 6th largest city with a population of around 500,000. It has a huge shipping port, a legitimate downtown, a few entertainment districts, a state college, and lots of other stuff including some suburban areas.

Beware the east side of Torrance. Otherwise, it's a town of over 1mil, so you would want to clarify your living preferences.
