I just started a job right by the Santa Monica airport. I live in West Hollywood and its a nightmare to drive back home. I am not too familiar with the neighborhoods on the West Side but I am looking into moving there. I prefer Santa Monica, West LA, and other decent areas north of Venice. What neighborhood would you recommend, and more important, where should I not be looking? What is Palms, Mar Vista and all these small cities I pass by on the way home right now. I am not looking for upscale or anything special, just decent areas where my girlfriend can walk the dog without being scared. Please help... Thanks!!!!

^The OP said West Hollywood was too far from Santa Monica. Monterey Park to Santa Monica is nearly triple the distance! And Asians are not all harmless believe me...

If you're already affording West Hollywood, you can probably bypass Palms. It's cheap but scuzzy.

Mar Vista is very close to the SM airport and is a nice area. Not fancy, but friendly and safe. You might also consider south santa monica around ocean park. It all depends on your budget and needs.

Check out the 90025 zip code, as far east as Sawtelle. The area goes by many names; I think it's typically "Sawtelle" on neighborhood maps. While I can't speak for anyone else's comfort level, I've never had any qualms about walking down Santa Monica Blvd. at night to grab some take-out.

I live near Santa Monica and Barrington and work near the SM airport. My commute is about 5 minutes via Gateway/Ocean Park.

I'm in the Sawtelle area as well and feel quite safe. The vast majority of housing here is multi-family though so if the OP wants a single family rental I'd recommend Mar Vista instead.

Mar Vista is only a 6.5 on the 10 scale of safe. There's gang activity there and it's been ramping up lately.

There's a big difference between Mar Vista south of Washington and (Mar Vista Gardens area) and north of Washington. I'm guessing the marjority of the crime is south of Washington.

I used to live on Sawtelle and Palms (which is pretty much the border of Palms and Mar Vista). That area is WONDERFUL. I went to school at the Art Institute of L.A. which is practically part of the Santa Monica Airport as it's right next to the runways. It only took me maybe 5 minutes to get to work.

Mar Vista park was right across the street from us and people would walk their dogs over there in the evenings. We played tennis at the tennis courts over there (which are free) almost every night. Another good area is Rose Ave in between Sepulveda and Overland. Lots of nice apartments with shade trees. I lived there when I went to high school and loved it. That entire area is very nice and very close to where you need to commute to!

It depends on what part of Mar Vista. Between Palms and Venice (Boulevards) is quite nice.
