If you were an engineer or in IT i'd say dress down. If they hire based on looks above personality then its best they don't hire you in my opinion.

It is best to wear a suit and tie to any interview.
As someone else mentioned, if the dress is casual then you will know that after you get the job. Los Angeles is a bit more casual than many places, but it still has protocal and you are expected to know the rule.
I am in the entertainment business, and you must know when to dress strickly professional and when it is time to dress down. No matter what I do I always wear a suit (I am a woman) I can dress it up or down, and attend almost any event/gathering. Also, as an assistant to a high placed entertainment professional, he/she want an assistant who will represent them well and with class.
Good luck!

Of course, it can always backfire.. I've talked to many people (not just in SoCal) who said a suit to an interview is two strikes against, especially if they're trying to keep the office environment friendly and casual. So it can be really tough to guess.
I've been overdressed and underdressed to interviews. Bottom line, I don't have any interest in working where the decision is made on image. I am confident in what I do, but I'm not an image-conscious person.
Unfortunately, Hollywood is incredibly pretentious and image-conscious.
