The Census Bureau has released detailed results for Caifornia for the 2010 census. They have the City of L.A. at 3.79 mil.

This is quite a bit short of the Ca State Finance Dept estimate last year of 4.1 mil., and even 100,000 shy of the Census' own estimate last year. Not unusual to have an undercount in urban areas, but that sounds like they missed a lot of folks. Bummer, I thought L.A. would top 4 mil for sure.

State-wide, "Whites" are now at "about" 40%, "Latinos" 37.6%, Asians 12.8%. Blacks 5.9%.

I don't have the latest authoritative figures but last time I checked the San Fernando Valley alone has about 1.75 million population! (sources: Congressman Brad Sherman, and Wikipedia)

I find it difficult to get my head around the idea that almost half of L.A. lives in the Valley. (I'm accepting the OP's numbers as accurate.) The traffic I've been seeing, maybe not that difficult to believe. That's in my top 10 list of why I'm becoming an ex-Californian soon.

Though Los Angeles didn't grow as much as estimates predicted, it still had impressive growth. The city added 100,000 people since 2000 which is pretty impressive. LA is still the 2nd largest city and it seems it will remain the #2 spot for a long time since Chicago lost over 200,000 in the latest census release.

On the state level is looks like Latinos are on pace to overtake whites as the Majority in California in the near future.

So far the trend has been the estimates from 2001-2009 have been higher than most major cities official 2010 counts. I'm inclined to believe the 2010 counts are more accurate, given the methodology is more in depth than the estimates program. I do; however, believe that the Census Bureau needs to work together with state and local governments, as they have their finger on the pulse more so than the Federal Government.

I think the official count for Los Angeles may be a little low, but if the city feels so, they can challenge the Bureau for a recount. As I understand it, the recount program DOES use local records as support for higher (or lower) population numbers. Houston has already issued a challenge. They were expecting to hit 2.3 million, and came in just under 2.1 million.

As we all know, the illegals are very attentive when it comes to filling out census forms and answering the door when the roving census takers knock on their overstuffed apartments.

You mean largest minority group. Whites haven't been a "majority" since the 90s.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't whites the largest racial group in California currently? If so that would make them the majority racial group because they are the largest racial group in California. I never said the White population in Cailfornia outnumbered all the other racial groups combined. I think your misinterpreting what I said. Overall I think were both right but we just explained it in different terms.

barely and this won't be the case for much longer, especially considering the baby ratios mentioned by mike121.
