So- I am one of the many people in this forum thinking about moving to Los Angeles and looking for advice. (Surprise, surprise!!) The main thing I am worried about is the highway system out there. I have lived in the NYC area before and loved it, but I also took a subway mostly and when that wasn't available a cab ride home from the club on Saturday night only ran me about 25$$ at the time. Are the roads really that crazy out there??How long did it take you to find your way around town??

Yes, transportation is hell out here. It's my only complaint about LA.

There is always traffic. It will take you about 30 min to go 10 miles.

I can tell you $25 will get you about 8 or 9 miles tops. I can tell you it cost me $80 cab rid from downtown to Santa Monica after a night of drinking.

However, it's a pretty easy area to learn and it's going to vary where you live. For instance, I live downtown. I know the 5, 10, 110, 405, 134, 210, 101/170... fairly well. Other than that, I have a GPS to tell me where to go.

$25 is a 5 mile cab ride on the westside if you're lucky! anyways, traffic here does suck, but it can be avoided by living close to where you work. if you move out to the burbs and work in downtown or santa monica your commute will be miserable. however, if you live and work in santa monica it's not bad at all. there's even a decent bus system assuming your commute isn't more than 5 miles or so.

it is hell. but if you're gonna drink, just take the expensive cab. sure beats a DUI, which costs in the neighborhood of 10 large

If you consider that hell, then sign me up. In my city (Philadelphia), it can take anywhere from 60-90 minutes to go 10 miles, sometimes more depending on what time of day and the conditions.

Hey everybody- thanks for the great advice. I don't know about those pictures of the cahuenga pass, but I've got a couple years to think about it. Thanks again!
