There are million dollar homes in Friendly Hills - and Spyglass Hill - and other expensive homes close to Uptown Whittier in the hills around the college - Whittier has a wide variety of real estate and the OP asked about areas with close proximity to East LA on a $900,000 income - La Habra Heights or Hacienda Heights are other options - especially with the 60 freeway being in H.H. - so I am just confused why you think Whitter is such a bad choice - compared to San Marino or Bel Air I would be in agreement - it's not like everyone in Whittier is at the lower range of income.

Your right and I'm wrong. When I expanded my choices to prices above 900K, there were a number of properties between 900 and 1.5 million. I knew parts of Whittier were very nice, particularly in the heights areas and north of Beverly.

I had no clue of some of the palaces located there.

It seems that the "best" areas are a bit more recession proof than the "good" areas.

Any opinions on which area of the above mentioned is the best?

To answer your question (and forever a Whittier fan since its all I know), there are plenty of good areas, I would go w/the one in San Marino, its an old neighborhood, lots of older folks, blended w/younger families at that price range and the distance & schools too. Parts of So Pas & Pasadena are good too, just a little more congested at times.

La Habra Heights, is excellent, if I had the $$$$$, that would be my prime location, for me, its close to LA (ELA obviously), the area is choice and the schools., a mini plus is its closer to Whittier (ok enuff i know!) ......but the distance....another story, and the 60 fwy nearby doesn't help, as everyone takes it. So I won't say parts of LA Habra & Brea, because its also further out.

Whittier, yes Friendly Hills area, East Whittier, WHittier Hills, area definitely choice areas, but sadly the schools are not. Which is why I took my girls out of the local High Schools there. Sadly Uptown Whittier is getting worse too (in some parts). But if you can afford the private, (St. Pauls or even Whittier Christian High), then its not an issue. And the distance isn't that bad, if you stick to Beverly Blvd to ELA, but I realize since I was there yesterday, theres still work being done between Whittier/Pico Rivera & part of Montebello but leaving early isn't so bad. (Theres also Washington (before the Garfield crunch) and Whittier Blvd if you can tolerate it and there might be work still going on there.

Have you driven out to any of the areas? During the day & at night to get a feel for them?

Good luck w/your search, its always hard making decisions that are too important, you will find your new home soon.....

Thanks AGNT,

This has been very helpful! My husband will be headed out there at the end of the month. The negotiations are ongoing so this isn't a done deal yet! Thanks again for all the information!
