If my husband were to be working downtown, where should we look at for a family friendly neighborhood with good elementary schools?

Is the cost of living similar to San Diego?

THANK YOU!!

The cost of property will be a bit higher in Los Angeles, but everything else will be similar. Depending on your housing budget, you may want to consider So Pasadena, Temple City or Arcadia. All are a decent commute to downtown and have a great school district and are family friendly. Torrance may work as well, as well as maybe Glendale and Burbank. La Canada and La Cresenta are other possiblitiies. Depending on the age of your kids, I would stay away from any area that is part of the Los Angeles school district other than maybe Eagle Rock. Also do not think of Pasadena because they too, have poor schools.

Look at Torrance. Lots of great family friendly areas and it's safe, especially near the border with Redondo Beach. Schools are good as well.

This perception that the ENTIRE city of Los Angeles is not family-friendly is hard to back-up, at least in my experience. I've seen families everywhere here, from Larchmont to Los Feliz. You don't have to live in the 'burbs to raise a family. I'm in Mount Washington and we have families living here. I see them at the train station, walking their dogs, picking up kids from school, frequenting restaurants in nearby Highland Park, etc.

Not at the same time, of course.

Go figure.

Lots of recommendations for Torrance, but its far from Downtown LA and more expensive than Glendale/Burbank which is the most comparable area close to DTLA.

I dunno how many people like 45 min-1 hour commutes every day.
