"Bachelor" apartment?
I keep seeing ads for "bachelor" apartments and was wondering just what the heck they are? Would they be the same as a studio/efficiency?

Bachelor's are typically smaller than studios. Not sure what the standard sq footage is, but I would guess around 300 sq feet.

Here in SoCal you can't advertise a place as a "Bachelor" - it's considered discrimantory. A "bachelor" is a studio --- kitchen, bath & living area. An efficency is a bit larger than a bachelor, may have a tiny kitchen and a very small bedroom.

Really? Someone should tell that to all the folks on Craigslist who are renting them out!

I think Craigs List is more lieniant ........ Advertising for a "bachelor" is saying you want a single guy, as their are 7 protected classes. Gender is one of them. Fair Housing is getting ridiculous There's many words/decriptions that you can't use.

I've seen them advertised as "Junior one bedrooms". The one I saw had an vinyl accordian wall separating the 'bedroom' from the living room.

my understanding has always been that a "bachelor" is a studio without a kitchen (possibly w/ a kitchenette)-- the outdated implication being that single men don't cook. the apartment i described above (the box, with a closet and a bathroom) was advertised as a bachelor 18 years ago. a "jr. one bedroom" is a large studio that has some kind of division between the living and sleeping areas that isn't quite sufficient for them to be considered two separate rooms. i once lived in one that had a half-wall and vertical blinds, and another that had an angled wall that blocked the sleeping area from view from the front door. when i could afford a place larger than the box, i always looked for something like that when i rented studios, because i hated the feeling of sleeping in my living room. made me feel more vulnerable, somehow.

Here is an example of what Katenik and I describe as a "junior one bedroom". The bedroom is right there with the living room but can be walled off with some type of divider.

This is an efficiency. Notice the bedroom/living room are combined but there is a distinct kitchen area.

Here is example of 'bachelor". This is the smallest type apartment. One room combined bedroom/living room. Kitchen is an area against the wall.

I'm not so sure it's an outdated idea .....
