Rhode Island is a state? I thought it was a suburb!

It's a parking lot next to Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Does it deserve to be a separate state? The total population is only about a third that of Orange County, or an eighth of NYC.

The differences between the upper east coast...rhode island, vermont, new hampshire, etc are night and day.

-LA is un ending sprawl and diversity. Small states in the east are much more homogenous.

-LA is convenience, commercialism. Rhode Island doesn't exist on a 24 hour cycle. I bet it'd be hard to find places open past 9 or 10.

Newport was nice. It reminded me a little bit of Santa Barbara. But also like Cape Cod or Marthas Vineyard.

Heck some people think New Mexico is part of Mexico, and the Baja peninsula is part of California

I think my notions are pretty close.

I've been through almost every state in the east. Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine. New York, Conn, Rhode Island, Mass. Pennsylvania, NJ, (Maryland, Delaware, DC a long time ago).

Rhode Island, Vermont, NH, Maine are all 90% white. The rich/poor gap is nothing like so cal. Maybe in the big cities, you'd find more diversity, but nothing like all of the thai places, chinese etc on every corner in so cal. Its a much slower pace of life in those states.

In terms of commercialism, you don't see the number of organic grocers, or heath food, like whole foods or trader joes. I think the level of materialism is smaller. Mass, NY, MD would be higher.

Another thing that would suprise people from California about Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine....white people work low wage jobs! White people work at McDonalds. White people make the beds.

I stayed in Vermont last year, and a young guy, about 22, 23 made the bed. Quite a contrast to the rhetoric you hear out here. Illegals do jobs natives won't do!

"Someone has to do the low wage work". All these justifications for illegal immigration.

I dont know much about the politics in those states, but they strike me as competent. Here, we almost lost the land around the hollywood sign. I can't imagine many historical sites in those states being sold or altered. Here, its more about private development. There, its more about the community interest and preservation.
